Just Plastic…or More Sinister – PART II
As a follow-up to my note just over a year-ago , Health Canada has formally announced that Bisphenol A (BPA), a common additive in hard plastics (polycarbonates–e.g. Nalgene bottles) is in fact a substance of concern. There is no immediate health risk or concern but they are moving forward by banning polycarbonate baby bottles and setting guidelines for the baby formula industry on an exit strategy to remove BPA in the liners of their cans.
This announcement will definitely cause a near-term shortage of BPA-free products so if you need any in the near future you better get shopping today…

Canoe Trips Just Got Easier…
It looks like I can throw out our MSR water filter since an entrepreneur in England invented a bottle that can filter water in seconds (without using chemicals!)
Just Plastic…Or More Sinister?
The Globe & Mail had an interesting article in Saturday’s paper regarding the prevalence and likely (some say potential) impacts of an extremely common chemical used pervasively in seemingly innocuous plastics (like the bottle of water you drank yesterday). I’d suggest you give the article a quick read, but I’ve provided a little excerpt and link below:

Honey versus Methicillin
Do you ever wonder why the “Western” Medical Establishment decided to abandon “natural” remedies in favour of the much more expensive and less effective lab engineered drugs and treatments?
Case in point: Honey is able to successfully treat infections that have been able to resist every available drug that doctors could throw at it, including the last line of anti-biotic defence Methicillin.
Cooler, Less Pollution & Less Gas?
The Scuderi Group is starting to build prototypes of their new “split-cycle” combustion engine. This new engine design has showed efficiency improvements in the 20% range in computer modelling tests compared to today’s typical combustion engine (essentially the same design since the 1870’s).
The end result: more power, cooler temp, less pollution and less gas
